A daughter came to visit her mother in an assisted living residence. The daughter was early, and so watched her mother taking part in a reading and discussion group using Reading Roundtable® stories with large print designed for use by older adults with memory impairment. The daughter did not know that her mother could still read, since her mother had stopped reading newspapers (previously a favorite activity). Afterwards, the daughter began to bring large print magazines such as Reader’s Digest large print edition and they would read stories to each other during their visits.
If we can adjust materials and activities to accommodate changes in abilities in persons with memory impairment, often they can recover abilities.
