Toilet Seats and Eucalyptus Leaves

An older man with memory problems who had worked for many years on a sheep station (ranch) in the Outback of Australia became a resident of a nursing home. He exhibited a “behavior of concern” when he began to urinate in many different places, except for his bathroom. A staff member familiar with sheep stations acquired a toilet seat similar to the ones used in outdoor outhouses on these stations and put it on the toilet in the man’s bathroom. Then she also put in some Eucalyptus branches with its leaves (and scent) in his bathroom. After that, he would use his own bathroom and stopped urinating in other areas.

Lesson Learned:

Know the habits of the person and use what is familiar to them.
